Oil success boost on Tyneside by jobsearch-25987

In the middle of an economic recession, any good news is welcome, particularly if it comes from traditionally blighted industries such as heavy engineering or the oil and gas fields. So it is particularly good news for Tyneside-based oil and gas engineering design organization Fabricom Offshore Services, who have just announced that it is on track to double its turnover and create up to 150 new jobs after a successful first year.

The company, a subsidiary of Fabricom GDF Suez UK, specializes in design and detailed engineering, maintenance and modification work to North Sea facilities and platforms. It also undertakes decommissioning work and provides offshore services for major oil and gas companies. Its position at the very heart of the oil and gas industry and its ability to diversify and adapt to a constantly changing marketplace have contributed to its success, and its first year returns have born testament to this.

The organization aims to increase its workforce fourfold by 2012 to 200 after securing lucrative contracts. A multi-million pound deal with upstream oil and gas operator Talisman Energy (UK) will go a long way to boosting oil jobs and oil careers in cutting edge technology and research. The company will provide Talisman with engineering modifications that will help connect subsea power and control systems to one of Talisman’s North Sea platforms. This will also help to secure drilling jobs and other oil rig jobs on the platform as well as boost productivity and ensure long-term growth for both companies. The industry is watching the partnership with interest.

Fabricom Offshore set up in North Tyneside in early 2008 with just three members of staff. That number has quickly risen and now more than 50 people work for the company directly. The firm also works with local companies, ensuring that the local economy benefits from its location in what has long been considered a jobs black spot. The parent company’s decision to locate its engineering centre of excellence in North Tyneside was secured thanks to a UK£1.6 million Selective Finance Investment grant from One North East. The grant (now rebranded as Grants for Business Investment) was encouraged by the firm’s commitment to create up to 250 new jobs. Part of its expansion plan is to create a new graduate trainee programme by teaming up with Newcastle College. This has shown the company’s commitment to investing in future generations as well as creating immediate jobs for local people.

During a period of such economic uncertainty, it is good to see a relatively small company doing so well, and their streamlined operation is inspiring other, larger organizations to take a second look at how they operate. Creating new oil jobs in a market that only a few months ago was cited as being on its knees has proven that a turnaround can be achieved in a very short time. Combined with support from financial backers who see the benefits of investing in advanced engineering, Fabricom Offshore’s success has been an inspiration to many in the industry, holding the company up as an indicator that maybe things aren’t quiet as bad in the oil and gas industry as the media would commonly have you believe. As Fabricom goes on to develop its company further, it will be interesting to see just how far this Tyneside-based company can take this momentum and whether it really is a true reflection of the industry in general.
